Why Preparing for the Wedding Is Gratifying?

ist1_11091394-happy-flower-girlI wonder how you prepared for such an important date in your life as wedding. Surely you’re familiar with the joyful expectations, the thrill and excitement felt during the period of arranging and settling things. How much did you have to invest to make this day a memorable start of a new life? Did you set such a goal at all? Do you agree that preparations for the wedding ceremony bear an important inner sense for both spouses?

Again, we keep publishing correspondence with the women who have moved abroad and begun building their lives anew. Today’s story is about preparing for the wedding ceremony. Hopefully, you will find out that some of the ideas concerning the heart-to-heart talks between spouses before marriage are equally applicable to the ordinary lives of two loving people, whatever cultures they might belong to.

“Hello, Ira!

Of course, it is a pity that you will not be present at our wedding. We will always be glad to see you after you are done with the move or when you decide to take a rest for a while. We have no travel plans until mid-January.

For me, our wedding and your move happening at the same time is a good sign associated with the beginning of a new life. So everything is great!

We are also very busy indeed. Busy not so much with the technical preparation for the wedding (our friends and relatives have been tackling most of the prep hassle) as with understanding each other in small things and adjusting to living together.

I think you know how difficult it is, after many years of self-reliant, independent and pretty much secure life, to change habits so that both you and your man could be comfortable. A lot has to be reassessed and discussed. We talk almost every day for long periods of time. Sometimes we come across very sore spots. I think that in some sense, it will be easier for you in the new house, because you have the opportunity to arrange everything as both of you want, and this is important.

In general, the process is not easy but very rewarding, with many discoveries, and I am very grateful to Sam that he does not shun our discussions.

Our wedding ceremony will be held at a Unitarian church. In contrast to the Orthodox Church it is very democratic and leases space for various events. The day before the wedding we are given the keys and we can do whatever we want. They just asked to take out the trash because a morning service will be held on Sunday. They even have a kitchen, dishes, and video- and audio equipment available. My religion does not matter — Sam said it is rather a spiritual ritual than a religious ceremony.

Two days ago we received a marriage license, which has to be returned to court after our marriage. Based on it, we will continue processing my documents further on.

We’ve been looking for the rings for a long time with many adventures. I wanted something special. I had tried on so many diamonds that already had the ripple in my eyes until we found a very cozy jewelry store in the old town (a historic center). There are no mad discounts there like at supermarket sales, but the very atmosphere is special, each purchase being a kind of a ritual. We have found a ring there with no diamonds but very original, and realized that all of this was just right for us. Tomorrow we’ll go to buy it out.

In general, we try to increment more meaningful steps to build a system of happy signs for the future. Sam thinks even more than I do about having the equal number of the Russian and the American at the wedding: our Russian friends are making ready the tables; our American family are decorating the hall and take other arrangements. There will be Sam’s video from Russia with my friends and singing, music and photos. Somehow he is able to feel the right things we need for this important event.

It seems that’s all.

I’m looking forward to reading your letter,

Vika”
